Q. What was your first job?

A summer job as a cleaner in the now defunct Roches Stores in Cork.

I’m not sure I’ve learned more about life and work in any single job I’ve had since.

Q. What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

Becoming a father. We’re blessed with two wonderful children from whom we’re learning every day.

Staying sane through it all is probably the achievement!

Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

To slow down. There are times when we need to move at top speed, but most of the time we’re running too quickly.

We don’t need to implement every idea, or pursue every opportunity. Taking a calmer, more discerning perspective is better for us now, and in the future.

Q. If you could step into the shoes of one businessperson for the day, who would it be and why?

Probably Warren Buffett. I love his long-term view and would expect to have some fascinating conversations with his team.

Doubt I could drink as much Coke as he’s reputed to consume though.

Q. In three words or less, how do you define success?

Freedom to choose.

Q. How do you motivate yourself and your staff?

Two things: meaning and great basics.

The work we do has to have real meaning, and when you’re actively involved with people and organisations in helping them progress and get to the truth of their situations, then you don’t need to worry about motivation.

The other key is staying in shape, both physically and mentally. Keeping everything as simple as we can.

Q. How do you relax?

Getting out for a walk or a jog, as well as reading. When you’re alternating work and family, the maxim that ‘a change is as good as a rest’ has to apply.

Q. What’s your motto?

To leave things in better shape than before I arrived.

Q. What are your aspirations for the future of your business?

To be brave enough to continue pushing the boundaries in the field of coaching and development, and to further develop the net impact of the work we’re doing with individuals and organisations.

Taking a calmer, more discerning perspective is better for us now, and in the future
