DiskShred brand manager Jeremy Bryan takes the Business & Finance 60-second challenge.

Q. What was your first job?

I worked in a hotel throughout my school years, but my first job after university was as an assistant manager of a wine bar and restaurant in the City area of London. I had great fun and a received a good grounding in customer service while I was at it.

Q. What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

Despite being based in Ireland, about 75% of DiskShred’s work comes from the UK and the rest of Europe. We have really taken on the competition with our product, our service, our pricing and our accreditations. We have increased our market share quarter on quarter for the last two years in a competitive market, and we’re very proud of this achievement.

Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

My father did a lot of public speaking, which did not come particularly easy to him. He came to realise that the most important thing isn’t necessarily what you say, but how you say it. If you truly believe in something your audience will pick up on this and get behind you.

Q. If you could step into the shoes of one businessperson for the day, who would it be and why?

I would like to be Richard Scudamore for a day, chief executive of the Premier League.

I would introduce post-match penalties for unsporting behaviour such as diving. This would be done with the aim of making the world’s greatest footballers act in a way befitting the adulation they receive, and to help restore some respect to the sport.

Q. In three words or less, how do you define success?

Opportunity plus application.

Q. How do you motivate yourself and your staff?

Individually I set myself multi-layered targets with goals to achieve on a daily, weekly and quarterly basis.

I know exactly where I am against these and know what I need to do on a daily basis to achieve them.

Our work environment is very focused and so to keep the team motivated we make sure everyone can celebrate our success together.

Q. How do you relax?

I have recently given up 11-a-side soccer, but still maintain some indoor football, despite the protests of my poor knees!

At home I am usually wrestling home improvement projects before getting the pros in to finish/redo the job.

Q. What’s your motto?

You make your own luck.

Q. What are your aspirations for the future of your business?

Since I joined in 2014, DiskShred has grown quarter on quarter.

We have some very specific financial goals to maintain this growth over the next two years and also want to raise our profile to be the number one name in data bearing media shredding in Europe.

… the most important thing isn’t necessarily what you say, but how you say it. If you truly believe in something your audience will pick up on this and get behind you
