These days, many businesses rely on some sort of cloud service to operate, but many of them do not know that they may be paying for additional services they don’t need, writes Campbell Williams.

There are many articles that discuss the advantages of using the cloud for business, such as better adaptability, disaster recovery and most importantly, the ability to better service the customer – and all of these articles are correct, but they speak mainly to those businesses that know what they want from a cloud offering. In reality, some small to medium enterprises have no idea. When you don’t know what you want, it’s easy to buy something you may not need.

It’s not to say that we shouldn’t talk about the advantages, but that these advantages should be presented as specific advantages to the particular companies that will find them advantageous.

TAILORED APPROACH

For the customer, a tailored approach guarantees that any service paid for is actually needed and useful; for the provider, a tailored approach means that services aren’t wasted, especially when those services really on servers.

On top of that, a tailored approach has obvious financial rewards: if a customer doesn’t need something, they don’t have to pay for it. This could translate to savings in the long run. If the customer does end up paying more however, it means their previous service wasn’t suiting their needs. It’s a win, win situation.

Six Degrees Group (6DG) has devised the Cloud Choice tool to allow businesses to make a more informed, cost effective decision. In short, it’s 6DG’s responsibility to have its customer’s best interests in mind and tailoring a cloud service specifically to a businesses needs is the way to do this.

As a cloud service provider 6DG has a responsibility to help its customers understand what they are buying. This is not only beneficial for the customer, but for the provider too.

A series of questions help 6DG to determine the specific type of service that will have to be offered to the customer in terms of servers, manpower and other detailed factors.

After Cloud Choice has discovered exactly what your business needs from its cloud offering, 6DG create a tailored report, which it will send to you for review. Any cloud service you choose to explore will then be built, bespoke, using this report.

The great thing about a tailored service is that it’s completely flexible: if you ever need additional services, or you need to adapt to new customer needs, working with the team at 6DG means that your service can be changed into whatever you need it to be.

MAKING THE CLOUD EASIER

Cloud Choice is part of an ongoing 6DG campaign to increase the understanding of cloud services within business, following on from their Jargon Buster tool, which aimed to explain much of the language used to sell and communicate cloud technologies.

As well as the Jargon Buster tool and Cloud Choice, 6DG are forever expanding their knowledge base – a comprehensive guide to the world of the cloud.
