The leading players in Ireland’s life sciences industry were honoured last night at the launch of the Business & Finance Life Science Ireland Index at the Science Gallery in Dublin in association with HSBC.

Ireland is a globally recognised centre of excellence and leader in the life science sector, combining a strong mix of native and FDI companies, with 18 of the top 20 pharmaceutical companies in the world operating here, and six of the top-selling pharmaceutical products exclusively produced here. The industry employs more than 50,000 people directly and exports over €445 billion annually making Ireland the largest net exporter of pharmaceuticals in the world. Ireland also boasts Europe’s leading medical technologies cluster – with nine of the top ten global medical technology companies – and the highest per capita employment in medical technologies personnel across Europe.

Last night, at the Science Gallery in Trinity College Dublin, Ian Barwick of Proton Partners International moderated a panel discussion featuring Alan MacNeice, Executive Director and Ireland Site Lead at Jazz Pharmaceuticals; Judith Moffett, Director Life Science, Engineering, Supply Chain & Construction at Cpl; and Robert Cobuzzi, President at Endo Ventures Ltd. The panel had a lively and enlightening discussion on the competitiveness of the life science industry in Ireland, and how it may develop in the future.

Also present were representatives from prominent life science companies including Icon, UDG Healthcare, Gilead, Pfizer, Horizon, Mallinckrodt and Astra Zeneca.
