John Riordan, Director of Support for Shopify takes the Business & Finance 60-second interview challenge.

Q. What was your first job?

My first job after college was with Ulster Investment Bank in Dublin as a Corporate Lending Executive.

Q. What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

From a practical perspective, it would be the work that I have done to advance the cause of working-from-home or remote work. From a philosophical viewpoint, it would be getting to the back nine of my career and still having a keen desire to better myself and learn every day.

Q. In three words or fewer, how do you define success?

Constantly growing skills.

Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

When you vehemently disagree with someone, lean in more to them, not less, and resolve to learn something from their opinion.

Q. How do you motivate yourself and your staff?

I try to be kind and respectful, set realistic targets and then as best as I can, get out of the way!

Q. If you could step into the shoes of one business person for the day, who would it be and why?

Ryanair’s Michael O’Leary – I am fascinated by the airline industry (having spent 15 years working in it) and I love his totally fearless nature. I like that he crosses the line from time to time.

Q. How do you relax?

Participating in and spectating any and all kinds of sport – but going for a long run would be the clear winner for me.

Q. What’s your motto?

Inter Mutanda Constantia – Constancy amidst change

Q. What are your aspirations for the future of your business?

I’d love to see Shopify change the lives of millions by making e-commerce better and more accessible for everyone, no matter what their circumstance or location.

When you vehemently disagree with someone, lean in more to them, not less, and resolve to learn something from their opinion.
