Business & Finance highlights notable new appointments at Tully Rinckey Ireland, Grant Thornton, Dechert and the Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation.

Thomas O’Malley, Managing Partner

Thomas O’Malley joins Tully Rinckey Ireland as Managing Partner, focusing his practice on Banking & Finance, Commercial Property, Planning & Environmental Law and Renewable Energy Law.

Prior to joining Tully Rinckey Ireland, Thomas was a Partner at McDowell Purcell, where he utilised his vast experience to assist clients with complex title structures, planning issues arising in large-scale developments, high-value property acquisitions and disposals, partnerships, joint ventures and collective property investments. Thomas also has experience with business leases, site assembly, and development agreements. He also advised lenders on all aspects of taking and enforcing security over property, assisted financial institutions in developing strategies and acted for receivers selling property.

Thomas is a Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution (CEDR) mediator which allows him to advise on a variety of property-related disputes. He obtained his LLB from Trinity College Dublin. Thomas is a member of the Law Society of Ireland.

Grainne Loughnane has joined Tully Rinckey as Partner in the firm’s Dublin Real Estate Practice. Grainne will focus her practice on Commercial and Residential Property Law. 

As Partner Grainne serves clients using her extensive experience in both the acquisition and disposal of commercial and residential real estate, loan acquisitions, commercial leasing and refinancing.

Carol Widger, Managing Partner, Dechert

Carol Widger joins global law firm Dechert LLP as the new managing partner of the firm’s Dublin office. Dechert was one of the first international law firms to establish a presence in Ireland, and the first major onshore transatlantic funds practice in Dublin.

A senior and highly-respected financial services specialist, Ms. Widger brings significant expertise advising fund promoters, fund managers, AIFMs, MiFID firms and other firms providing services to investment funds. She has 20 years’ experience advising on the establishment, launch and ongoing management of all types of investment funds, including UCITS and AIF products. Ms. Widger is a former Chair of Irish Funds’ Legal Working Group and is the current Chair and founding member of the Dublin location for 100 Women in Finance.

“Dublin is an important funds center and Carol’s significant experience will position us for further growth in the Irish funds space and strengthen our global offering,” said Gus Black, global co-chair of Dechert’s financial services group.

Oliver O’Connor, Partner in Private Client

Oliver O’Connor has been promoted to Partner in Private Client at Grant Thornton. Oliver joined the firm in 1998 and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with the Audit and Assurance department before moving to the Financial Planning and Private Client division in 2006. 

 Oliver has extensive experience in structuring the personal financial affairs of company directors, professionals and specialist sole traders in a tax efficient manner. He provides a complete financial advisory service to a wide range of clients, both personal and corporate, alongside providing corporate pension and financial advice to many single member and multi member entities.  Oliver also works with many of our family owned businesses on their succession planning.

Gerard Walsh has been promoted to Partner in FAAS at Grant Thornton. Gerard joined Grant Thornton in Dublin in 2011 and transferred to Cork in 2013.  Gerard will take up the Partner position in the Cork office, reflecting growing demand for the firm’s services in the Cork region. 

Gerard specialises in offering business process outsourcing and compliance services to large corporate and international groups. From his time working for a number of large multinationals across a range of sectors and locations, Gerard has extensive finance operations and transition management experience gained within a complex finance function environment.

The Jack & Jill Children’s Foundation, an Irish charity providing home nursing care to children under five nationwide including end of life care, has announced the appointment of Carmel Doyle as CEO effective immediately.  Carmel has worked with Jack & Jill for the past ten years, initially as Communications Director, and more recently as Interim CEO since June 2018, replacing Hugo Jellett who stepped down as CEO.  

With 30 years’ experience at senior management and board level in communications and business, Carmel has worked with several PR consultancies in Ireland and internationally, including Text 100, Edelman, Keating & Associates and Heneghan PR, as well as running her own business.  She specialised in corporate PR and campaigns across a wide range of clients including multinationals and not for profit organisations, winning several awards for her work.  A former researcher with NCB Stockbrokers, she is a marketing graduate and a fellow, lecturer and former President of the Public Relations Institute of Ireland.
