Irish sporting royalty was on show as the outstanding achievements of our finest sports people were honoured at the Irish Sports Awards.

The inaugural Irish Sports Awards took place on Saturday, February 28th at the DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel in Dublin.

Created and hosted by Business2Sports and Business & Finance Media Group, the Irish Sports Awards recognises those outstanding sports people who have made significant contributions to Irish sports in a local and global context.

In addition to the recognition of current sports people across a range of disciplines, the Irish Sports Awards also honoured some of the greatest Irish sporting ambassadors of a generation in its ‘The Legends Of Irish Sport’ category.

Willie John McBride, Micky Ward, Tony Ward, Paul McGrath, David O’Leary, Ronnie Delany, DJ Carey, Mick O’Dwyer, Tony Hanahoe and the Irish Triple Crown winning rugby team of 1985 were all honoured at the prestigious event.

Katie Taylor was victorious in the ‘Sports Person of the Year’ category, while Stephanie Roche won the ‘Breakthrough of the Year’ award.

Paul McGinley was voted ‘Manager of the Year’ and the Irish Women’s Rugby Team picked up the ‘Team of the Year’ gong. The Outstanding Contribution to Sport was presented to journalist David Walsh for work in uncovering the use of doping within professional cycling.
