Ornua

As a global dairy company, Ornua has been at the forefront of the Irish food industry for the last 60 years. Starting out as a government agency and eventually becoming Ireland’s first food company worth €1 billion, Ornua have had a remarkable journey. Ornua was the recipient of the 2022 Business & Finance Company of the Year Award. The judges credited the company’s growing presence in the US as well as its significant output amongst the reasons for Ornua winning the award.

“Ornua’s continued and successful product innovations, along with their growing presence in the US, has copper-fastened its reputation as one of Ireland’s most valuable and robust organisations.”

Today, sales for the company’s most popular product, Kerrygold butter, have reached €1.6 billion and the company is on track to hit its 2025 target as it continues to see strong growth in international markets. CEO John Jordan has said that 11 million packets of Kerrygold branded cheese and butter are sold around the world every week now.

Turbulent times

The company has navigated Covid-19 and prior to that, Trump-era import tariffs which resulted in an additional €50 million in US taxes in 2020. The Biden administration suspended the tariff on European butter imports and the company is now keeping a close eye on the next US general election, the outcome of which might have a direct impact on their business.
