dCarbonX Ltd (“dCX”) announced today that it has signed a Decarbonization Exploration Collaboration Agreement with B9 Energy Storage Limited & B9 Energy Horizons Limited of Northern Ireland (“B9”), to explore the unique rock formations of that region for their potential to develop safe and sustainable underground sites for the storage of hydrogen and carbon dioxide.

Our focus is predicated on delivering local solutions to local problems as demonstrated by our ‘Regionalisation Of Carbon Sequestration’ (“ROCS”) philosophy.

The agreement is designed to support Northern Ireland’s transition to a low carbon future and involves new approaches to hydrogen storage and carbon sequestration. The ultimate goal is to offer constant zero carbon cost-effective energy solutions for homes and businesses across the region.

The scope of the agreement targets the exploration for subsurface resources to develop premium cost-effective energy storage and carbon sequestration assets. dCX and B9 will work with other regional stakeholders such as the “Belfast Power-to-X” Consortium to develop the commercial basis for the development and integration of these Energy Transition assets. Notably, the successful development of such energy storage facilities can support the further deployment of other renewable sources of energy, such as wind and solar, both locally as well as in the “All Ireland Energy” market context.

Commenting on today’s announcement, Tony O’Reilly, co-founder of dCarbonX said: “We are excited to work with such an innovative company as B9 Energy in identifying and developing subsurface assets which will assist in the decarbonisation of Northern Ireland. Both companies bring hugely complementary skill sets to the partnership which we believe will deliver both societal and economic returns. Our focus is predicated on delivering local solutions to local problems as demonstrated by our ‘Regionalisation Of Carbon Sequestration’ (“ROCS”) philosophy.

David Surplus OBE, Managing Director of B9 Energy said: “This innovative agreement with dCarbonX comes at a pivotal moment in B9’s assessment of pathways for the use of sustainable hydrogen to help decarbonise Northern Ireland’s heat, power and transport sectors. The huge quantities of fossil fuels in use today will be mostly phased out by 2050 and we now need to design, specify and deliver the above and below ground infrastructure assets that will replace them. We believe that working in close collaboration with dCarbonX will provide a new dimension to the task ahead. ”
