Matheson has announced that Michael Jackson has been elected as its new managing partner for a four-year term commencing in 2016, succeeding long-standing partner Liam Quirke, who will become the firm’s chairman.

Jackson has been the head of Matheson’s Financial Services division for more than a decade and advises many of the world’s leading financial institutions, investment banks, asset management companies and broker-dealers.

Through his active involvement in the financial services industry, including a term as chairman of Irish Funds, he has led numerous initiatives that have resulted in the introduction of important legislative provisions and significantly enhanced the competitiveness of Ireland’s global financial services offering.

Commenting on his appointment, Michael Jackson said: “I am delighted and honoured to have been chosen by my fellow partners to serve as managing partner of Matheson at what is a very exciting time in the development of the firm. The current economic and regulatory environments continue to present Irish and international businesses with opportunities and challenges in areas on which Matheson is ideally placed to advise. I look forward to working with my partners and our clients to achieve continued success for our clients and for the firm. I am also delighted that Liam will continue to contribute to the implementation of our strategy and our future growth. His election as chairman of the firm is a testament of the high regard in which he is held within the partnership.”

Liam Quirke added: “I know Michael will be a terrific leader of Matheson. Law firm leadership is about people, business and law. Michael has spent his entire career in Matheson and he is hugely respected in the market as a business leader as well as a lawyer. I look forward to seeing him lead the firm to new heights.”

Earlier this month, the company was named as one of the Financial Times’ top 10 most innovative law firms in Europe for 2015. The firm also achieved a standout commendation for innovation in growth and business development, and is the only Irish law firm to receive a commendation in this category.
