Declining mobility

In our Ones to Watch section, we highlight some of the top up and coming businesses in Ireland. This week we feature Mobility Genie.

What is it?

Mobility Genie is a technology assistive kiosk designed to allow pharmacies to offer an interactive online experience which is very similar to what is available for a customer in store. The touch screen pad within the Mobility Genie kiosk allows easy navigation around the products and videos.

Each product featured on Mobility Genie has a video which showcases: the situation a given product can be used for, how it can be used and where it can be used. This allows the customer to decide on a product which is most suited to their needs.

The product purchase is then made on the kiosk and it is delivered to the door of the customer.

With the over 65s population increasing hugely year on year, Mobility Genie aims to give the pharmacy the opportunity to satisfy the needs of their customers within this growing demographic.

Who’s behind it?

Based in Tralee, Co Kerry, Deirdre Fee is in her 30th year in the business of medical mobility aids and is passionate about empowering independence for those with limited mobility.

Deirdre has a background in nursing – she holds a diploma in Gerontology (study of the elderly) – and shares a bricks and mortar family business,  Medical Mobility, with her husband and son.

Her son Cliff comes from a IT background and together they have come up with an innovative business idea to expand the existing business and that is how ‘Mobility Genie’ was born!

How is it funded?

As most do when starting out on a new business venture the bank was the obvious place at that time to secure funds to get started. The family also used the support and knowledge available to them through the local enterprise offices.

Future plans?

The pilot phase of Mobility Genie has been rolled out around the country over the last couple of weeks and it has had an extremely positive response.

Meaghers Pharmacy, Mc Cabes Pharmacy, and Cara Pharmacy are among many pharmacies nationwide who have decided to provide this innovative service for their customers.
