Derry Cronin has over 30 years of experience in his field. Today, Derry is a key figure at EHS International, Ireland’s fastest-growing single-source provider in the sector, led by CEO Chris Mee.
What pushed you to pursue a career in this field?
I was drawn to the challenge of being part of a brand-new pioneering company like EHS International, led by Chris Mee and working on how strategic collaboration and innovation can drive growth and make a lasting impact on our employees and customers. The challenge of helping build something from the ground up, alongside a passionate team, was too appealing to resist
Career-wise, would you do anything differently?
While every step of my career has taught me something valuable, I honestly believe in never looking back or having any regrets. I once heard the US model of never staying longer than seven years with any company and seem to have subliminally adopted that approach throughout my business life.
In one sentence, how would you define success?
Success is creating sustainable growth while empowering others to thrive and leaving a positive legacy in both business and the community.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
One piece of advice that has always stuck with me is, ‘If you make your bed every morning, you will have accomplished the first task of the day’. It’s a simple reminder of the importance of discipline and the power of small daily achievements.
How do you motivate yourself and your staff?
I lead by example with energy, enthusiasm, and complete transparency. I believe in cultivating a culture where everyone feels respected, valued, and invested in our collective goals. When people are truly engaged, motivation follows naturally.
How do you handle adversity?
Adversity is an opportunity to learn and adapt; I approach challenges with a solutions-focused mindset and involve my team to ensure we emerge stronger and more resilient. If at first you don’t succeed, keep trying.
How do you relax?
I enjoy spending quality time outdoors, whether on the golf course, coaching, or simply soaking in the natural beauty of Cork with my family and friends. It’s a great way to reset and recharge
What is your favourite (non-business) book?
While it’s hard to pick just one, I’d say the Jack Reacher series is a favourite. I also thoroughly enjoyed Johnny Sexton’s autobiography for its insight into discipline, and resilience.
What is your aspiration for the future of the business?
My goal is to see EHS International grow into a globally recognised leader in the environmental, health, and safety sector, while also playing a key role in enhancing Cork’s reputation as a centre for innovation and sustainable business practices. Since our launch in October 2023, we’ve already exceeded our employment targets, reaching over 100 staff members within just six months.
In October just gone, we officially opened our €3 million Safety Training and Research & Development facility in Little Island. This cutting-edge centre offers advanced fire and safety courses, including pioneering firefighter robot training, to address some of the most complex fire and life safety challenges. Additionally, we have several acquisitions in the works that we plan to announce in the near future, further accelerating our growth and impact in the industry.
What was your first job?
My first role was as a Trainee Laboratory Technician with John A. Wood Ltd in Cork, which gave me invaluable hands-on experience
What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?
My greatest achievement is undoubtedly my family – being married to my incredible wife and watching our children grow up happy, healthy, and successful. That, to me, is the true measure of success.
