FDI of the Month February 2023: Siemens Healthineers launch laboratory equipment centre in Swords

Following a multi-million-euro investment from Siemens Healthineers, with support from IDA Ireland, a new Centre of Excellence for Immunoassay Instrument R&D will open in Swords, Ireland.


Siemens Healthineers has launched a new Centre of Excellence for Immunoassay Instrument Research and Development (R&D) in Swords, Ireland.

The centre will focus on developing innovations in laboratory instruments used to detect infectious diseases, cancer and blood disorders, and will result in the creation of 100 proposed new jobs.

65 of those jobs will be ‘high-level’ engineering roles in artificial intelligence, machine learning, software engineering, systems engineering and data science.

The investment will span multiple years.

Clinicians can now also “optimise patient care by bringing new levels of precision” to the diagnostic laboratories that serve them, said Siemens Healthineers in a press release.

Taoiseach Leo Varadkar TD led congratulations, stating: “This is a significant expansion with the creation of 100 new jobs, the majority of which will be highly skilled, providing great opportunities for engineers.

Exciting new technology like that which will be developed in Swords, can make a real difference to people’s lives, to patient outcomes and to healthcare systems globally. Siemens Healthineers has been active in Swords supplying medical diagnostic equipment to hospitals and laboratories since 1966.
