Stephen Clancy is Motor Engineer and Claims Assessor with HOMS Assist, a client-oriented law firm operating nationwide, with offices in Dublin, Limerick and Cork. Stephen’s expertise as a motor assessor is unique in Irish law firms, as he acts as a conduit between insurance, legal and garages, specialising in all types of motor damage claims to achieve the best possible result for the client.

Working closely with garages and insurance companies, Stephen ensures the insurance company covers the cost of the work, and that clients secure the full value of the cost of the necessary repairs to their vehicle, including depreciation and diminished value. This means there is no cost to the person involved in the accident.

What was your first job?

My first job was as an apprentice mechanic in a well known local car dealership. My main duties involved vehicle inspections, diagnosing problems, performing vehicle maintenance and repairs, and giving customers advice regarding their vehicles.

What pushed you to pursue a career in this field?

My father also worked in this field, so from an early age I became interested in vehicles and the technical side of mechanics. When the opportunity arose to begin an apprenticeship, I grabbed it with both hands.

What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

I would consider becoming a fully qualified mechanic, or moving into the Motor Assessor field, up there as my proudest days.

Career wise, would you do anything differently?

I’m very happy with how my career has progressed to date. My experiences to date have provided me with a great foundation to excel in my current role as Motor Engineer and Claims Assessor with HOMS Assist.

In one sentence, how would you define success?

Positive action, combined with positive thinking, results in success.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

If you don’t like the road you’re walking, start paving another one.

How do you motivate yourself and your staff?

The three areas I would associate with motivation are: giving room to grow, sharing positive customer feedback throughout the organisation, and most importantly, recognising a job well done.

How do you handle adversity?

To overcome adversity, it is important to have confidence in yourself and your abilities. Treat every day as a learning day. Sit down, understand the issue, and use the adversity as a tool for learning going forward.

How do you relax?

I like to relax by spending time with my family. At the weekend we like to spend time on forest walks and getting out as much as possible.

What are your aspirations for the future of the business?

As stated earlier I like to treat every day as a learning day. In my new role I want to continue to grow and gain experience, and support clients to achieve the best possible outcome for them when they need to make a claim.
