“Putting our clients at the forefront of everything we do.” – 60 Seconds with Niamh Conneally, Head of Institutional Client Management at LGIM

Niamh Conneally is Head of Institutional Client Management for Ireland and Nordics for Legal and General Investment Management.  She has specialised in the area of financial advisory and has been an integral part of LGIM’s growth story since joining the firm in 2015, helping to support the expansion of LGIM’s footprint across LGIM’s pension and life fund range (“PMC”), European regulated funds and segregated accounts. Niamh was also recently listed as a rising star of European finance by Financial News.

What was your first job?

My first job was working as a pharmacy assistant on the weekends while studying at University.

 

What pushed you to pursue a career in this field?

I studied Finance at university as I was interested in the different aspects, roles and services across the sector. I gravitated towards the buy side, specifically a client-facing role within investment management, as it presented an opportunity to work directly with institutional investors which appealed to me. The role is dynamic, and each day brings about a new challenge which keeps things interesting.

What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

When I reflect on my time at LGIM, I’m most proud of the amazing team we’ve built over the years and the continued support we provide to the growth of our business internationally. Putting our clients at the forefront of everything we do is key to our role, and this approach is reflected in the long-standing relationships that we have fostered over the years in Ireland and other European markets.

Career wise, would you do anything differently?

Being a mentor myself, I can see first-hand how important mentorship can be. I wish I had sought out a mentor earlier in my career as the guidance and support they provide can be invaluable.

In one sentence, how would you define success?

Professionally, success is feeling excited and challenged within the role I’m doing, whilst also maintaining a healthy balance between my work and personal life.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

There’s no such thing as a silly question. I’m sure this is one that people hear all the time, especially when starting out in their careers but it’s vital to remain curious and continue to ask questions and learn from the people around you, no matter how experienced you are.

How do you motivate yourself and your staff?

Being part of a team that is contributing to the global growth of LGIM’s business is an exciting place to be. As a manager you must trust your team and empower them to do their role. Furthermore, it is important to ensure your team have a path to progression and work with them to set out clear objectives along their journey.

How do you handle adversity?

Within a professional context, it’s important not to react too quickly, take time to assess the situation, carving out the best course forward, while also taking counsel from a trusted colleague. Take time to reflect, this will help you learn from past experiences and prepare for new challenges.

How do you relax?

I find a great way to re-centre is doing Reformer Pilates or Yoga, not just physically but mentally I always feel refreshed. I really enjoy cooking so subjecting my family to new recipes is always a fun activity!

What is your favourite non-business book? 

I’m not sure if this counts as non-business but I love financial crime books and documentaries and The Smartest Guys in the Room by Bethany McLean and Peter Elkind is one of my favourites.

What are your aspirations for the future of the business?

LGIM is a market leader in the UK and our ambition is to continue to internationalise our business, with my focus being on supporting our distribution team in Ireland and the Nordics.
