Sir Nick Clegg’s tribute to Peter Sutherland shines a light on leadership, drawing from history and personal experience.

The overarching message in Sir Nick Clegg’s heartfelt tribute to Peter Sutherland was leadership: An ability to inspire. It was delivered during his acceptance of the Sutherland Leadership Award.

Clegg’s reflections captured the essence of Sutherland’s legacy: A commitment to international partnership and a belief in the power of unity to overcome division. “The virtues of international partnership, of leadership across borders, and of the strength of open trading economies—they are ideas as valuable as they are unfashionable in many places today,” Clegg observed..

A Leader Shaped by Europe

For Clegg, the European cause is not just political; it is personal. With a Dutch mother, Russian heritage, and a Spanish wife, his identity embodies the interconnectedness of Europe. “I’m so European that while I was the British Deputy Prime Minister, the Mail on Sunday ran an unforgettable headline: Is there anything British about Nick Clegg?” he quipped.

This personal connection fuels his perspective on Europe’s potential and its challenges. Clegg lamented the “economic stagnation and political rudderlessness” gripping Europe today, much of which he attributed to the lingering effects of the 2008 financial crash. Yet, history offers hope. “History has also taught us that the European cause is often re-imagined and reasserted in response to crises,” he said, pointing to Ireland’s post-crisis recovery as a model for others.

Lessons in Reconciliation

Clegg’s anecdotes about his great-grandfather’s experiences during and after World War II underscore the importance of reconciliation. Despite the scars of Nazi occupation, his great-grandfather saw the European project as a triumph of peace over war. “In the end, history tells us just as it told my great-grandfather, there is no alternative but to turn enmity into amity across our continent,” Clegg asserted.

This spirit of turning adversity into opportunity reflects Sutherland’s legacy. Clegg praised Sutherland’s ability to lead through persuasion and action, emphasising that Europe’s future depends on leaders who can think big and act boldly. “To save itself, the European project needs people who are prepared to think big and act boldly. Peter never hesitated to do that,” he said.

The Unfinished Work of Unity

Clegg’s speech also highlighted the unfinished business of European integration, particularly in the digital economy. He noted the barriers that still hinder start-ups from scaling across the continent: “The single market remains Europe’s biggest asset, but we need to finish the job,” he said. By completing the single market, Europe can unlock the wealth and innovation necessary to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

As Clegg acknowledged, his current role at Meta places him in a unique position to observe the tension between regulation and innovation. But he framed this tension as an opportunity for leadership: “If [Sutherland] were here today seeing Europe stagnating and the stitches of the globalised world slowly being pulled apart, he would not sit on the side lines complaining. He would be leading through argument and persuasion.”

A Call to Action

Clegg’s tribute to Peter Sutherland is a powerful reminder of the enduring values that define great leadership. In a world fraught with uncertainty, the lessons of history and the legacies of visionary leaders like Sutherland offer guidance. The call to action is clear: to think boldly, act courageously, and lead with purpose.

Clegg concluded: “In the years ahead, we will all need a bit of Peter’s spirit to pull Europe through.”
