Company of the Month June 2020: New CEO and new clients for Intercom

Intercom, the Irish-founded tech company, has appointed Karen Peacock as Chief Executive Officer. Peacock, named one of the “top 50 most powerful women in technology” by the National Diversity Council in the US last year, will succeed co-founder Eoghan McCabe, who will become chairman. This comes as the company announces the recent acquisition of new, high-profile clients including Facebook and Amazon.

Founded in Dublin in 2011 by Eoghan McCabe, Des Traynor, Ciarán Lee and David Barrett, Intercom has offices in Dublin and San Francisco. They currently employ over 600 people with approximately 250 based in Dublin.

The software company specialises in building customer relationships through conversational messenger-based experiences across the customer journey. It has developed a platform which aggregates business messages for sales, marketing and customer support departments and enables companies to communicate with their customers via their own website, mobile apps and email. It estimates the number of end-users as over 1 billion. They achieved ‘unicorn status’ in 2018 when valuation reached $1 billion after a round of investment which yielded $125 million.

Eoghan McCabe has said of Peacock’s appointment as CEO: “Karen is one of the strongest and most brilliant leaders in software…and she is a really unique operator. CEOs must operate at tremendous scale, but she also has a background in mathematics and started out engineering software before climbing up the ranks in business. You don’t get a lot of great business leaders who are also nerds and product people.”

To alleviate the pressure of working from home during the Covid-19 pandemic, Intercom is giving all employees a week off in July, without needing to use existing leave.
