Legacy Consultants managing director James Brogan takes the Business & Finance 60 second challenge.
Q. What was your first job?
I think my first real job was working in my uncle’s bar, Brogans on Dame St. I was a lounge boy.
Q. What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?
I think over the last four years to have developed Legacy Consultants into one of the leading sponsorship agencies in Ireland, employing seven people, has been a nice achievement.
However, we have a lot more potential and I would like to think my greatest business achievements are still ahead
Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
You are only as good as the team you have around you. So treat people fairly and with respect. Try to enjoy it too.
Q. If you could step into the shoes of one businessperson for the day, who would it be and why?
Ed Woodward, chief executive of Manchester United. I just think running a professional sports club would be a fascinating role. As a fan maybe I could get a say in some transfers also.
Q. In three words or less, how do you define success?
A life lived.
Q. How do you motivate yourself and your staff?
I think when you run your own company there is huge internal motivation to do the best you can possibly in any task and to have pride in anything you do. You don’t want to let anyone down.
For staff, as I said, there is no Legacy without the great team we have and we are continuously trying to create a culture where they feel a sense of ownership in their role and a passion to do their very best.
I want them to feel a part of the journey we are on and that they can contribute greatly to our growth.
Q. How do you relax?
Playing or watching sport; I still play GAA with the club St Oliver Plunketts and find it a great release.
Any time with my new wife Niamh is always a work-free zone and keeps me sane.
Q. What’s your motto?
‘Clear eyes, full heart, can’t lose’ – Friday Night Lights.
Q. What are your business aspirations?
I think for the moment we have great potential here in Ireland to grow both the client base and the range of services we offer across the sponsorship and communications space.
You are only as good as the team you have around you
