Helen Maher is Regional Director for Ireland of food delivery service Deliveroo.

What are your main priorities and goals in your role?

My first job was in hospitality, working across commercial roles in major hotel chains in Ireland. It was an invaluable foundation – teaching me strategic planning, commercial acumen, and real-time problem-solving in a fast-paced, customer-driven environment. Those early experiences shaped my leadership style and instilled an appreciation for industries built on delivering exceptional consumer experiences. That passion led me to travel tech, where I spent over a decade at Expedia Group in senior commercial roles, driving sustained revenue growth and optimising market performance.

What pushed you to pursue a career in this field?

I’ve always been drawn to industries that combine technology, consumer behaviour, and operational excellence. Similar to working travel tech, Deliveroo is about leveraging innovation to create seamless, high-impact experiences at scale that essentially make our lives easier. Deliveroo sits at the intersection of cutting-edge technology and something fundamental to our busy modern lives – being able to order meals, groceries, and retail products directly to your door when you need them. Being part of a company that’s transforming how people eat and shop is really rewarding.

What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

Driving innovation and growing our presence in the Irish market, within its thriving tech sector – has been one of the most fulfilling aspects of my career. I’m incredibly proud of the team that we have built here in Ireland and the partnerships that we’ve developed with both international and local businesses. A recent milestone has been launching our first partnership with a major grocery and retailer in Ireland through our exclusive collaboration with M&S. It’s a game-changer for consumers, bringing a new level of convenience to grocery shopping. This is just the beginning – on-demand grocery is evolving rapidly, and Deliveroo will continue to shape its future in Ireland.

Career-wise, would you do anything differently?

Every challenge and shift has been a learning experience, so I wouldn’t change my career path. However, I’d encourage my younger self to embrace risk earlier. The most significant opportunities often come from stepping into the unknown, and some of my biggest professional breakthroughs have come from making bold moves. Take the bigger job, move countries, gain as much experience as you can – you win or you learn.

In one sentence, how would you define success?

Success is about impact – driving innovation that matters, building teams that thrive, and leaving a lasting, positive mark on an industry.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Surround yourself with people who challenge and inspire you. The best teams are built on diversity of thought, bold ideas, and a shared drive to push boundaries. Also, don’t change yourself to fit an environment, if it’s not working, change the environment.

How do you motivate yourself and your team?

By creating a culture of ownership and purpose. People often do their best work when they’re solving meaningful problems and can see how their work contributes to a bigger mission. At Deliveroo, we’re not just delivering food; we’re redefining convenience, supporting restaurants and merchants by extending their reach. Making sure my team feels connected to that vision is a key motivation.

How do you handle adversity?

With perspective and resilience. The tech industry evolves at an incredible pace, and disruption is constant. The key is staying focused on solutions, learning quickly from setbacks, and adapting with agility. Challenges are inevitable, but how you respond to them defines leadership.

How do you relax?

Spending time with family, exploring new food experiences, and disconnecting from screens. Food has always been about connection, and I love taking the time to enjoy meals with the people who matter most. Travel is also a big part of my life – I believe that travel is a force for good, and I love discovering new places and cultures.

What are your aspirations for the future of your business?

I see Deliveroo continuing to push the boundaries of what’s possible. For the Irish business, as we mark 10 years in the country, our key ambition is to continue to support Ireland’s incredible restaurant sector, whilst  becoming the leader in on-demand grocery and retail as we continue to grow partnerships and selection on the platform, giving consumers more reason to use Deliveroo. Restaurants are at the heart of our business, and we are focussed on expanding our geographical coverage and reaching new cohorts of customers, like those who live in commuter and suburban areas. I’m excited for what’s next as we continue to transform how people eat and shop in Ireland.
