By Emma Montalbani
What are your main priorities and goals in your role?
My priority is to build a business that responds quickly to changing customer needs and delivers outcomes that genuinely matter.
Great service, flexibility, and long‑term relationships are central to how we do that.
Equally important is continuing to grow HCS in a way that protects our culture and supports our people.
What are your biggest challenges as Managing Director?
Protecting and preserving our culture as we grow is, in fact, my biggest challenge, because it underpins everything we deliver for customers.
Alongside that, it’s making disciplined decisions on where to scale and invest – ensuring that growth is focused, sustainable, and aligned with our long‑term strategy.
How do you keep your team motivated?
Be clear on direction, give people ownership, and bring them on the journey. When people feel trusted and can grow, motivation looks after itself.
We put a big focus on learning, and on celebrating progress – not just targets.
What are the challenges facing the industry going forward?
Cyber threats, skills shortages, regulation, and artificial intelligence adoption are all rising at once.
Customers want innovation, but they also want governance and control. The bar is higher now, and, as a business, you’re expected to be fast, secure, and compliant, all at the same time.
What new trends are emerging in your industry?
Security-first transformation and practical AI are moving from ‘nice to have’ to ‘must have’.
The winners will be those who leverage technology to drive simpler, safer day-to-day operations.
Are there any major changes you would like to see in your sector?
I’d like to see a stronger focus on outcomes across the industry. Technology should earn its place by reducing risk, increasing efficiency, or improving decision‑making.
Too often, the language is complex or overly technical, and that creates distance rather than trust.
As an employer, are you finding any skill gaps in the market?
Yes, technical skills are particularly challenging. Being a cultural fit for HCS is equally important, and we are looking for people who can live our values.
Technical skills get you in the door, while attitude and teamwork are what make you successful.
How did your strategy develop in the context of the banking and economic crises?
It reinforced one thing: resilience wins. We stayed close to customers and invested in strong foundations rather than quick fixes.
In uncertain times, consistency and clarity become your competitive advantages.
How do you define success, and what drives you to succeed?
Success is earning trust from customers and from your own team. I’m driven by progress, building great teams, and delivering results that matter.
The real win is when a client says, “That made life easier”.
What’s the best advice you’ve been given in business?
Back your people and protect your integrity. Trust takes years to build and minutes to lose.
What advice would you give to others starting in business?
Fail fast, stay curious, and be clear on your ‘why’. Be consistent, as building trust is the real growth strategy. And don’t be afraid to ask for help; good mentors save you years.
What have been your highlights in business over the past year?
This year has been about building on the foundations of HCS, strengthening the team, deepening our culture, and sharpening how we deliver for customers.
I’m especially proud of the progress we’ve made in building a business that people are proud to belong to, because that’s what underpins everything else.
What’s next for your company?
Doubling down on cybersecurity, cloud, and responsible AI, and expanding our impact across mid-market and enterprise – always anchored on measurable outcomes.
To support this continued growth, we recently announced a significant investment of €13.2 million in the business. This investment will drive the creation of 125 jobs and increase HCS’s headcount to 175 employees across our Waterford, Cork, and Dublin locations.
It is expected to grow annual revenue to €30 million by 2028, and also supports the opening of a new office in Dublin.
Where do you want your business to be this time next year?
Our goal is to be recognised for providing exceptional customer service, consistently delivering value in ways that clearly distinguish us in the market.
What is the best book you’ve ever read (non-business) and why?
To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee is a reminder that empathy and integrity are non-negotiable.
What is your favourite hobby and why?
Exercise and time outdoors help me to reset and stay sharp.
What is your mantra for life?
Show up. Keep perspective. Be yourself.
