Bob Geldof has been announced as the recipient of the 2026 Sutherland Leadership Award, which will be presented at the Business & Finance Awards at the Convention Centre Dublin on Thursday, 10 December, in association with KPMG.
The Sutherland Leadership Award recognises outstanding international leaders who embody the values and legacy of Peter Sutherland, one of Ireland’s most influential figures on the global stage.
Established in 2018 with the support of the Sutherland family, the award has previously been presented to a distinguished group of international leaders, including European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, ECB President Christine Lagarde, former Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi, former US Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, Dame Louise Richardson, Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi, and former US Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.
Sir Bob Geldof is one of Ireland’s best-known international figures, whose influence has extended well beyond his career as a musician and songwriter. Over several decades, he has combined his creative career with high-profile campaigning and humanitarian work, becoming one of the most prominent voices in the global fight against poverty and inequality.
His organisation of Live Aid in 1985 and Live 8 in 2005 brought the issue of global poverty to an unprecedented international audience, mobilising some of the world’s biggest musical acts while placing pressure on political leaders to address the challenges facing developing countries.
Geldof has continued to use his international platform to campaign on issues including poverty, development and global inequality. His work has seen him engage with political leaders, governments, international organisations and the business community, while his public speaking has established him as a prominent commentator on global affairs, leadership and social change.
His contribution has been recognised internationally. He has received numerous honours for his humanitarian and campaigning work, including the Man of Peace Award in 2005, and has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II in 1986 for his contribution to the fight against poverty in Africa, becoming an honorary knight of the Order of the British Empire.
Geldof’s recognition with the Sutherland Leadership Award reflects a career defined by an ability to use influence beyond his own profession and to bring international attention to issues of global significance. His work has consistently connected public advocacy with political and economic action, making him a distinctive voice in international affairs.
The award also carries the legacy of Peter Sutherland, whose career spanned Irish, European and global affairs. Sutherland served as Ireland’s Attorney General, European Commissioner for Competition, founding Director-General of the World Trade Organization and UN Special Representative for International Migration. Throughout his career, he was an advocate for international cooperation, open engagement and Ireland’s role on the world stage.
The Sutherland Leadership Award has become one of the leading honours presented through the Business & Finance Awards, recognising individuals whose leadership and contribution extend beyond national borders.
The 2026 Business & Finance Awards, sponsored by KPMG, will take place at the Convention Centre Dublin on Thursday, 10 December, bringing together senior figures from the Irish and international business, political and social communities.
