David Keyes is Managing Director of United Drug, an Irish pharmaceutical distribution company. It was originally founded by a group of pharmacists in Ballina, Mayo, in 1948. Keyes was appointed Managing Director of United Drug six months ago.

What was your first job?

My first role was as a clerk with the Bank of Ireland. It was a great foundation, giving me an early understanding of finance, customer service, and the importance of accuracy and cash flow in business.

What pushed you to pursue a career in this field? 

Working in the finance department of a pharmaceutical company sparked my interest in the sector. It gave me an appreciation of how the healthcare market functions, and I was drawn to the idea of contributing to an industry that has such a direct impact on people’s lives. That experience encouraged me to transition into a commercial role, where I could have a broader influence.

What would you regard as your greatest (career) achievement to date?

Being appointed Managing Director of United Drug has been my proudest professional milestone. Since 2020, I’ve also served as Director of United Drug Distributors and Head of Public Affairs for PHX Ireland, roles that have allowed me to play a part in shaping the business during a period of great change in healthcare.

Career-wise, would you do anything differently?

On reflection, I wouldn’t change much. Careers have natural highs and lows, and it’s important to trust the process, focus on growth, and allow yourself to develop at the right pace.

In one sentence, how would you define success?

Success is living a healthy lifestyle with a good balance between work and home. The pandemic reinforced for me the value of time with family and friends, alongside a busy career.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

Own up when you make a mistake, and don’t repeat it. We all make errors, but honesty builds trust. I encourage my team to view mistakes as opportunities to learn and grow into stronger professionals.

How do you handle adversity?

By facing challenges head-on and addressing them quickly. Problems rarely improve when left alone.

How do you relax?

Exercise and time with family and friends are key for me. I particularly enjoy running, cycling and playing golf. 

What are your aspirations for the future of your business?

My aim is to ensure United Drug is aligned with the evolving needs of the healthcare market. We’re focused on growth, operational excellence, and delivering for our customers and partners across Ireland.

What new trends are emerging in your industry?

One of the most significant trends is the ongoing digital transformation of healthcare, from data-driven decision-making to the use of advanced technologies in distribution and patient care. At the same time, we are seeing rapid growth in highly specialised medicines, particularly for chronic and rare conditions, which require new approaches in supply chain management. These changes demand greater flexibility, innovation, and collaboration across the sector.

What are the challenges facing the industry going forward?

The most pressing challenge is the rising cost of healthcare, driven by longer life expectancies and the increasing complexity of treatments. While it is positive that people are living longer with chronic conditions, the associated cost pressures will require new models of efficiency and value in healthcare delivery. Balancing affordability with continued innovation will be essential to ensure patients get the therapies they need.
