With a lifelong passion for construction and a commitment to innovation, Ger Hoare reflects on his journey from his first engineering role in London to leading the delivery of thousands of sustainable homes in Ireland and the lessons learned along the way.

What was your first job?
I’ve always worked in the construction industry. My first job was working as an engineer for John Sisk & Son in London.
What pushed you to pursue a career in this field?
Construction is in my blood. My father was a developer, so I grew up looking at opportunities that existed in the industry and on building sites. I always got a buzz out of working with my father, chasing subcontractors and negotiating with suppliers, and ultimately delivering high-quality products.
What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?
Being part of the team at Cairn that delivered over 2,000 homes last year was hugely rewarding. Everyone is aware of the challenges around housing supply. Cairn is committed to being part of the solution responding to this challenge. It was particularly pleasing that Cairn was recently recognised by our peers at the Irish Construction Excellence Awards where we took home ‘Project of the Year’ for Seven Mills and ‘Innovation in Construction’ for our lead role in building new homes to Passive House standards in Ireland.
Career-wise, would you do anything differently?
Learn the art of actively listening earlier. At Cairn, the homeowner is very much at the centre of the design process. We know it is crucial in a customer and market-led business that we listen to our customers’ wants and needs, so we can always offer the right product, while creating spaces and environments where people can thrive.
In one sentence, how would you define success?
Do better today than you did yesterday.
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
Be firm but fair.
How do you motivate yourself and your team?
Continually ensure that people feel empowered to make a difference. Mistakes will happen, and that’s ok once we learn from them.
What is your approach to overcoming challenges?
Pause, don’t overreact. I am a big believer in speaking to people you trust, asking for their advice, but making your own decision.
How do you relax?
I have two young children at home, so I spend time with them and my wife, and I also try to squeeze in the odd rugby or hurling match.
What are your aspirations for the future of your business?
To further build on Cairn’s status as the most trusted provider of housing in the country and to continue to be a key partner in the delivery of high-quality, energy efficient homes in great locations.
