Google established a presence in Dublin in 2003. Now, more than 20 years later, the company is marking a new chapter by opening a community culture and arts space at Bolands Mills, called ‘The Factory’.

Google acquired the building that houses ‘The Factory’ in 2018. Located in Grand Canal, it has hosted names such as David Bowie, The Bolshoi Ballet, and U2, who spent time there performing, recording or rehearsing.

Following the acquisition, Google began restoring the 150-year-old mill. The restoration project included over 50,000 square feet of newly landscaped outdoor areas. In addition, it added 30,000 square feet for retail and community use.

In September 2023, Google opened the building to the public. The space now aims to foster creativity, connection, and collaboration.

Bolands Mills includes workspace for Google’s engineering teams alongside retail units for independent local businesses. The site also features 46 discounted-rent apartments for key workers. These homes, provided in partnership with Clúid, support the local community.

The site’s newest addition, The Factory, represents a major step in reimagining the area as a centre for arts, culture, and creativity.

“With the opening of The Factory, we’re creating a revitalised space for arts, culture, and creativity — a space for people to come together, express themselves, and nurture the talent of the Dublin Docklands,” said Vanessa Hartley, Head of Google Ireland.

At the official opening, Minister for Culture, Communications and Sport, Patrick O’Donovan, noted, “Spaces like this are essential for fostering artistic expression, inclusion, and innovation – especially in dynamic urban areas like the Dublin Docklands.”
