The American Lawyer Transatlantic Legal Awards has named Matheson partner and Irishman Pat English to its list of Transatlantic Rising Stars, which honours lawyers under the age of 40 for excellence in handling transatlantic matters.

The Awards highlights noteworthy lawyers and firms in transatlantic matters involving corporate, finance and litigation work.

English is a senior member of the Matheson International Business and US Business Groups and became partner in 2009.

That same year he moved to the US to lead the New York office, and later the Palo Alto office also.

His practice focuses on advising predominantly US clients on establishing operations and doing business in and from Ireland.

In 2016 Matheson celebrates its 20th year of having a presence in the US and continues to be the only Irish law firm with both partner-level tax and corporate expertise on the east and west coasts.

Matheson was also shortlisted for Ireland Law Firm of the Year and partners Gerry Thornton and Rory McPhillips were named as Transatlantic Finance Dealmakers of the Year finalists for their work on the Element Financial Corporation aircraft asset backed securitisation (ABS), the first such ABS exceeding $1bn since 2008.

Michael Jackson, managing partner, Matheson, commented: “This year Matheson is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the establishment of our first office in the US and we believe that this award reflects a continuation of our tradition to invest in the best people to support the needs of our internationally focused clients.”

Reflecting on the win, English said: “The development of close relationships with our clients in the US is integral to our business and our success here at Matheson. I am very grateful for this award which is testament to the collaborative effort of the team on both sides of the Atlantic.”
