PayPal today revealed the findings of its 2013 Global Holiday Shopping Study of more than 4,500 consumers from across the world. The survey found that increasing numbers of people are shopping on mobile devices and online in the run up to Christmas, with many looking for a queue-free and more flexible shopping experience this year.

The survey discovered that most consumers (81%) plan to do Christmas shopping on their smartphone, tablet, or online this year. A quarter of respondents indicated this would be their first time Christmas shopping on a smartphone or tablet.

The main reasons that consumers gave for mobile shopping this Christmas are not having to wait in a long queue (48%), being able to shop at odd hours of the day or night (46%) and price comparison shopping to find something cheaper (41%).

Of the 81% of respondents who plan to do their shopping on a smartphone, tablet or online this year, 31% said that they plan to do more than half of their shopping online or by mobile device.

Louise Phelan, vice president of Global Operations for Europe, Middle East and Africa for PayPal comments on the study: “Christmas is an increasingly busy and social time of year. People have more to do and less spare time, so it’s not surprising that they are turning to their mobile and tablet to complete their festive shopping away from the crowds.

“Retailers in Ireland need to recognise this fast growing mobile shopping trend and make it easy for consumers to browse, click and collect from the comfort of their home or any convenient location. This ability to provide customers with anytime, anywhere shopping is essential for businesses in Ireland looking to grow their sales.

“PayPal will continue to provide retailers and consumers with innovative, flexible and convenient ways to trade online and on mobile. The cashless Christmas is drawing ever closer.”
