In our Ones to Watch section, we highlight some of the top up and coming businesses in Ireland. This week we feature EthiCart.

What is it?

EthiCart is a user-friendly app that gives quick, accessible and easy to understand information around food products sustainability and ethical standards. If you want to shop more sustainably but lack time to research and a place to get the information you need, EthiCart enables and empowers you to buy products that align with your values.

EthiCart’s data draws from on-the-label information, government guidelines and scientific research.

Who’s behind it?

EthiCart’s two co-founders are Laura Brennan, a Computer Science and Business undergraduate, and Lara Páirceir, a Sociology and Social Studies undergraduate. They are both passionate about the environment and reducing our impact, and thanks to their varying studies can bring different perspectives and approaches to each other. They strongly believe the lack of transparent information is what causes a disconnect between the products people want to buy and the products they do buy. They are determined to combat this, to give consumers the power to vote with their wallets.

How is it funded?

Currently EthiCart are working with Launchbox, Tangent, Trinity’s Ideas Workspace, student accelerator program and have received €10,000 in funding to get started.

Future plans?

EthiCart are currently working on an MVP to pilot but would like to receive additional capital this year so they can get a fully working app ready to go in 2020 and grow EthiCart’s database of items.  The founders would like to continue to refine their data to get the most accurate, transparent picture to the consumer.
