Denis Carroll, VP of European Operations at Oxford Global Resources takes the Business & Finance 60-second interview.

Q. What was your first job?

My first “real” job was as an English teacher in South Korea where I spent three years teaching from kindergarten to professional levels. This was an incredible experience and taught me so much about the importance of and opportunities created by good communication and an open mind.

Q. What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

Winning the Oxford Cup in 2018, which recognises the Office of the Year across Oxford’s 25 locations worldwide. When I look at such a strong team of leaders supporting our business, it makes me very proud to know I had a hand in their development.

Keeping my wife happy despite an obsession with work, sport and cars is a very close second!

Q. In three words or fewer, how do you define success?

Fair, honest, consistent.

Q. What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

A lot of things happen to you because of your title, not because of you. Stay humble.

Q. How do you motivate yourself and your team?

Constant communication of the goal that would make us all proud to be part of this team.

Q. If you could step into the shoes of one business person for the day, who would it be and why?

Liam Sheedy. I’d love to see the mix of business acumen and sporting knowledge needed to drive and coach high-performing cultures in both Bank of Ireland and Tipperary.

Q. How do you relax?

Spending time with family or watching hurling relaxes me (somewhat!). Washing the cars and shaving with a straight razor clears my mind.

Q. What’s your motto?

Go big or go home.

Nothing in life is as important as you think it is, while you’re thinking about it

Q. What are your aspirations for the future of your business?

To be recognised by our clients as a reliable, best-in-class partner and by my colleagues as an employer who appreciates hard-work; cares for our individuals and their families’ wellbeing; and provides opportunities for them to develop personally, professionally and financially.

A lot of things happen to you because of your title, not because of you. Stay humble.
