“As a global law firm in Ireland, DLA Piper established its Dublin office in response to demand for globally benchmarked legal and tax advice from domestic and multinational companies operating in, expanding into or exporting from Ireland. The firm’s initial focus in Ireland will be on the life sciences, technology and financial services sectors,” states Country Managing Partner David Carthy.
Globally the firm has over 4,500 lawyers, offering a wide range of sectors. The Irish office of DLA Piper, led by Mr Carthy, has already made a number of significant partner hires. “We will continue to boost the practice to a team of up to 100 high calibre lawyers and business professionals over the coming years,” he says.
DLA Piper saw its revenue increase by 7.7 percent to $2.84 billion in 2018, which represented the second straight year of growth for the global firm. The Dublin office, which was officially launched by Chairman Emeritus of DLA Piper Senator George Mitchell on May 15th, 2019, has been accepting engagements since January 2019.

“Ireland’s position in the global market has become increasingly important given the internationalisation of the economy,” explains Mr Carthy. “With the global remit DLA Piper has for our existing clients, alongside re, it was a natural step for the company to establish an office in Dublin.”
The office will assist global companies with Irish legal tax work and act as a gateway for Irish and international decision makers to access DLA Piper’s global platform.
Mr Carthy says the decision to establish a Dublin office was not related to Brexit: “Ireland’s position as international business hub meant that it was always going to be a matter of time before DLA Piper came to Ireland. In a post Brexit environment, there could be an even greater opportunity if Ireland establishes itself as a global centre for legal services.”
He adds, “DLA Piper has been welcomed with open arms and we are thankful of the support we have received from the Irish Government, IDA Ireland and the Law Society. Ireland has a pro-business environment in which new firms can grow and thrive. We have also had great support from Irish and multinational companies before we established ourselves on the ground in Ireland.”
