Henry (Hank) Paulson, 74th US Secretary of the Treasury & Founder of the Paulson Institute has been announced as the 2021 recipient of The Sutherland Leadership Award.

The Sutherland Leadership Award was established in 2018 with the support of the Sutherland Family to recognise outstanding international leaders who have embodied the values of one of Ireland’s and Europe’s finest leaders, Peter Sutherland. Since its inception, The Sutherland Leadership Award has recognised José Manuel Barroso, former President of the European Commission and Mario Draghi former President of the European Central Bank.

The Sutherland Leadership Award is now an integral part of the Business & Finance Awards Programme which is now in its 47th year hosted in association with KPMG. The awards are currently open for nominations

Henry (Hank) Paulson served as the 74th Secretary of the Treasury under President George W. Bush, from July 2006 to January 2009. Prior to that, he had a thirty-two year career at Goldman Sachs, serving as co-chairman and co-CEO in 1998, and as chairman and chief executive officer beginning in 1999. Earlier in his career, he was a member of the White House Domestic Council as well as a staff assistant at the Pentagon.

Today, he is Founder and Chairman of the Paulson Institute, which aims to foster a US-China relationship that maintains global order in a rapidly evolving world. A “think-and-do” tank founded in 2011, the Institute supports market-based solutions to climate change and environmental conservation as well as working with financial markets and international financial institutions to implement green lending standards and champion innovative approaches to finance low-carbon growth.

Secretary Paulson is co-chair of the Aspen Institute’s Economic Strategy Group, along with former White House chief of staff, Erskine Bowles. The Economic Strategy Group convenes, in a non-partisan spirit, a diverse range of distinguished leaders and thinkers to address significant structural challenges in the U.S. economy.

Paulson also co-chairs the Advisory Board of the Bloomberg New Economy Forum, a conference of global leaders focused on emerging economies and technologies. The New Economy Forum is committed to promoting the smooth transition from the old economy — one based on labour-intensive manufacturing and trade in goods — to a new one focused on industrial automation, digital services and exchanges of data.

A lifelong conservationist, Paulson was Chairman of The Nature Conservancy Board of Directors and founded and co-chaired the organisation’s Asia-Pacific Council. In 2011, he founded the Latin American Conservation Council, composed of global business and political leaders, which he co-chaired until 2017.  He also co-chaired the Risky Business Project from 2013-2017, a non-partisan initiative that quantified and publicised the economic risks of climate change in the United States.

Announcing Secretary Paulson as the 2020 recipient of the The Sutherland Leadership Award, Ian Hyland, Publisher of Business & Finance Media Group said: “Peter Sutherland made a significant contribution to life in Europe and beyond through value-based leadership and a vision that was ahead of his time.

“In establishing The Sutherland Leadership Award, we look to recognise leaders who share and illustrate the values that Peter Sutherland displayed over his exceptional life. Secretary Paulson has embodied so many of these qualities over his distinguished career.”
