What was your first job?
My first job was in Bord na Móna, taking soil samples from around the country for geological studies.
What pushed you to pursue a career in this field?
I’ve always had an interest in how things work both from a hardware and software aspect. Getting into a tech-related industry was inspired by a primary school teacher who brought an Apple Mac into school. That was a big deal back in the late ‘80s and from then I was hooked!
What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?
Building DocuWare to a level in the UK & IRE where we are now one of our stronger emerging markets with lots of potential. We now have a large team to support our sales and expansion efforts. DocuWare went from being a document management solution that was hardly known, to a name that is much more recognizable in this market.
Career wise, would you do anything differently?
This is a difficult one to answer but I’m very happy where I am right now so maybe not.
In one sentence, how would you define success?
Success in one sentence is a happy customer and a happy team
What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?
The best advice I was given was – learn your market, learn your product and always be honest.
How do you motivate yourself and your staff?
I believe work should be fun. What really motivates me and my team is seeing our customers successfully using our product to grow their business and really getting great value from it. The satisfaction that my team feel in providing the right solution is why we want to keep doing this.
How do you handle adversity?
I feel adversity is like a lesson. It’s a chance to learn and adapt. In fact, adversity often adds opportunities that we would miss under “normal” circumstances.
How do you relax?
I’m a big fan of classical music so I relax by listening to classical music. I also ride Triumph motorcycles. Taking these old classic motorcycles out into the countryside on quiet peaceful country roads is a great way to relax – as long as you excuse the noise of my engine.
What are your aspirations for the future of the business?
My aspiration for the future of the business is to continuously strive to provide the best product and work to get the best results for our customers. It is really important to me to have happy customers – it makes our job easy and a lot more fun.
