Dave Thompson is Vice President UK & Ireland for Construction Information / Intelligence Services (CIS). CIS is an all-Ireland based company, part of the global organisation Hubexo, which has been providing real-time insight and intelligence on planned, ongoing and completed schemes within the Irish construction sector for more than 50 years.

What was your first job?

My first job was in account management with Property Finder, where I developed a deep understanding of data and its role in real estate and land. This role laid the foundation for my passion for business information and strategy.

What pushed you to pursue a career in this field?

My early interest in real estate and construction was solidified during my time at Property Finder. I enjoyed turning data into actionable insights that help businesses thrive. When the opportunity at CIS arose, it felt like the perfect fit to combine my passion with my skills.

What would you regard as your greatest achievement to date?

One of my proudest achievements has been leading CIS through significant industry challenges, from the rapid shift to hybrid working during the pandemic to navigating economic and political turbulence. Despite these obstacles, we’ve not only maintained our position but grown exponentially, solidifying our role as a trusted leader in construction intelligence.

Career-wise, would you do anything differently?

I’d tell my younger self to focus on what excites me sooner rather than following a traditional career path. While my accountancy background provided useful skills, I realised that my strengths lie in building relationships and driving strategy.

In one sentence, how would you define success?

Success is finding a career that excites you, where you can make a meaningful impact while growing both professionally and personally.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given?

“Take a step back before you react.” This simple but profound advice has helped me turn potentially emotional responses into thoughtful, strategic decisions throughout my career.

How do you motivate yourself and your staff?

I focus on creating a sense of purpose and clarity for myself and my team. When everyone understands their role and how it contributes to the bigger picture, they naturally feel motivated. Open communication and empowering individuals to take ownership of their work are also key.

How do you handle adversity?

Adversity is a test of resilience and adaptability. I approach challenges as opportunities to innovate and learn, often seeking perspectives from trusted peers and friends outside my immediate work circle to gain clarity.

How do you relax?

Spending time with family, reading a good book, or walking outdoors helps me recharge.

I’m originally from Northern Ireland and always look forward to returning to visit friends and family. A trip to the Dirty Duck in Holywood is a must—it’s the perfect spot to enjoy stunning views across the Irish Sea.

What are your aspirations for the future of the business?

I want CIS to be recognised globally as the definitive, trusted source for construction and land project data. My vision is to continue setting industry standards, providing clients with transformative insights, and driving innovation in how data shapes the future of construction.
