Amazon, one of the world’s largest multinational technology companies, is set to hire upwards of 150 employees in Northern Ireland

Amazon, one of the world’s largest multinational technology companies, is set to hire upwards of 150 employees in Northern Ireland. The new hires will occupy seasonal support roles for the Christmas period.

In June, the company announced that its recent move to a new delivery station in Harbour Estate, Belfast, will result in its workforce expanding from 25 to 40.

Amazon is also expected to hire 20 permanent workers at the new Dublin west warehouse, along with a further 150 delivery staff working for contractors. It is the first time the US company has hired staff in the Republic of Ireland to handle online orders.

The company announced in July that it hopes to bring 1,000 new jobs to Ireland over the next two years in roles such as software development engineers, network development engineers, systems development engineers, optical deployment engineers, database engineers, Dev Ops engineers and support engineers.

The new roles will be based across the company’s Cork and Dublin sites.

“Amazon has been investing and growing in Ireland for over 15 years, and today, we are reaffirming and increasing that commitment with the creation of these highly skilled roles,” said Mike Beary, AWS Ireland Country Manager, in a statement.

He continued: “We have seen a surge in demand for cloud services in Ireland and globally, and we are excited to add 1,000 highly skilled roles so we can continue to help our customers to innovate, especially in this difficult time, and work towards building a robust digital economy for the future.”

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment, Leo Varadkar, welcomed Amazon’s ambitious plans, saying they were a huge vote of confidence in Ireland’s economy: “It speaks to our ambition to make Ireland the tech capital of Europe. It demonstrates our ability to continue to attract high quality jobs in growth sectors like digital.”
