This week sees new and notable appointments at Johnson & Johnson, Calor Ireland, ESW, Engineers Ireland, Qualcom, and O’Flynn Exhams LLP.

María Pobre, General Manager
Johnson & Johnson

Johnson & Johnson has announced the appointment of María Pobre as its General Manager of commercial operations for its Innovative Medicine sector in Ireland.

Pobre joined J&J in 2010, where her roles spanned commercial operations and market access across Europe and the US, in both pharmaceuticals and medical devices.

In her new position, she will lead all aspects of the commercial business in Ireland. She will also focus on accelerating patient access to innovative medicines.

“Throughout my career, what mattered most to me is translating innovation into something meaningful that improves outcomes for patients and their healthcare professionals,” Pobre commented.

“That’s what I am most excited about as I step into the role of General Manager for Johnson & Johnson’s Innovative Medicine operations in Ireland. Together with the team here, I look forward to working alongside the health services, the Government, patient groups, academia and industry partners, to ensure timely access to treatments that deliver real value for patients and the healthcare system.”

Sytze Nijman, Chief Executive Officer
Calor Ireland 

Calor Ireland has announced the appointment of Sytze Nijman as its new chief executive. Nijman joined the company a year ago as a Chief Operating Officer. He previously held the same position at SunSource, where he drove growth and led the successful integration of the business within SHV Energy.

“It is a privilege to take on the role of CEO at Calor Ireland. Calor has a proud heritage, an exceptional team and a vital role to play in supporting Ireland’s energy transition. My priority is to build on the strong foundations already in place, driving sustainable growth while maintaining the highest standards of safety, compliance and operational excellence,” Sytze Nijman commented.

Carl Cowling, Chief Executive Officer
ESW

The international growth engine ESW has announced the appointment of Carl Cowling as its chief executive, effective early September.

In his new role, Cowling will focus on accelerating commercial growth in priority markets, building on the company’s momentum in agentic commerce, deepening value for clients, and ensuring that the business and its resources are aligned with the opportunities offering the greatest long-term potential.

Carl Cowling, incoming Chief Executive Officer of ESW, said, “I have spent my career on the retail side of this relationship, so I know what brands need from a partner like ESW.

“The company has built a distinctive international capability at a scale very few can match, and it has moved decisively on agentic commerce at a pivotal moment in the way consumers discover and buy products.

Áine Myler, Director General
Engineers Ireland

Áine Myler has been announced as Engineers Ireland’s new Director General, effective on 31 August.

Previously chief executive of the Charities Institute for four years, Myler has had extensive experience in senior roles. These include Director General and Registrar of the Society of Chartered Surveyors Ireland, and Chartered Surveyor.

Welcoming the appointment, Dave Murphy, President of Engineers Ireland, commented, “Engineers play a vital role in shaping Ireland’s future, from delivering critical infrastructure and advancing innovation to tackling climate change and supporting sustainable growth.

“We are confident that Áine’s leadership will help further strengthen the voice of our members and the contribution of engineering to national policy and economic decision-making.”

Myler added, “I am delighted to join Engineers Ireland at a time when the skills, expertise, and leadership of engineers have never been more important. I want to help ensure that engineering, across all its disciplines, has the profile and influence it deserves – that we continue to attract and develop the next generation of engineers, support the highest professional standards, and make the strongest possible case for engineering to be at the heart of decisions about Ireland’s education, infrastructure, and economic future.”

James Quigley, Field Service Engineer
Qualcom

Qualcom has appointed James Quigley as Field Service Engineer. In his new position, Quigley will support Qualcom’s commitment to keeping businesses connected and optimised through robust IT infrastructure.

He will oversee the configuration, installation and maintenance of vital IT equipment across the company’s customer sites.  Quigley will also be responsible for providing field IT services to a diverse client base, including small businesses and retail outlets, while ensuring full compliance with industry-recognised accreditation standards.

Quigley joins from Roc Technologies, where he was responsible for logistics and service delivery across Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland.

Before this, he held field service engineering roles with Esteem Managed Services and Linetex Computer Group, where he worked with brands such as Walt Disney International, McLaren Cars and British American Racing.

“As technology continues to evolve, IT infrastructure is becoming increasingly central to how businesses operate; therefore, optimising these systems is of the utmost importance,” Quigley commented. “It’s an exciting time to be joining Qualcom, as the company continues to expand its presence in Northern Ireland, particularly with their new dedicated AI practice”
